A fire spread over woodland and scrubland just outside Leatherhead last night.

Firefighters were called to the fire that covered area about a third the size of football pitch at Norbury Park on the A24 at 9pm.

A spokesman at Leatherhead fire station said they damped down the area, checked for hot spots and finished the operation at 12.45am. He said the cause of the fire remains unknown.

He said: "We had a quarter of a hectare of woodland and scrubland on fire last night. It pretty much burnt itself out."

This latest blaze comes after five suspected arson attacks on historic Ashtead Common on Sunday.

Rangers with chainsaws felled a tree and cut a path for firefighters as they fought the last and largest fire that evening.

The fire spread across an acre of land and destroyed several trees, stag beetle larvae and a clutch of grass snake eggs.

Since last Wednesday scores of firefighters have been fighting a huge fire which has destroyed swathes of heathland in Pirbright.
