More people owed money by a pub landlady who has vanished have come forward to vent their frustration at being left in the lurch.

Thousands of people have read the article about the Headley Hills pub, soon to reopen under its former name, the Cock Inn, since it was published on our website yesterday.

Pub staff along with food and drink suppliers for the pub in Church Lane, Headley, have spoken about their anger after Susan Stevenson and her daughter Isabella vanished last month owing them thousands of pounds.

There are rumours the pair spent around £400,000 carrying out an unpopular refurbishment of the historic pub, but only succeeded in driving away most customers.

The Stevensons surrendered the pub lease at the start of February. They have yet to respond to voicemail messages left on their phones by this newspaper.

After the publication of the article, a tradesman from a bathroom design company said he is afraid they have gone back to Spain where the mother owns an apartment.

He said: "She branded herself a Spanish property developer when meeting the Epsom horse racing crowd.

"She personally owes me £300 for fixing a leaking roof above the restaurant one Christmas Eve evening."

A number of others, who also feel out of pocket, left comments on community Facebook group What’s on in Leatherhead.

Ollie Ward said: "She still owes me £100! In Spain no doubt..."

Helen Elisabeth Harvey said: "They certainly fleeced us...I hope they get their come comeuppance."

Bethany Doyle said: "They have been dodgy for a long time - failed to pay me when I worked there about three years ago."

One reader commented on the article, criticising the previous owner's botched attempts to update the popular 17th century coaching inn.

They said: "Until it's so called ' refurbishment ' this was a very popular and pleasant local inn. Then along comes an idiot with the bright idea of spending a fortune and ' modernising ' it.

"If the reports are true in the region of £400,000 was spent, and to what avail.

"It has been ruined, all it's character destroyed and the food and beer/lager overpriced. On my last visit during a beautiful afternoon, my brother and I were the only customers in the place."

A new owner, Red Mist Leisure, plans to reopen the pub this month after investing £450,000 in its refurbishment.

Mark Robson, managing director of Red Mist Leisure, said they love bringing pubs with battered pasts back to "good quality eating and drinking pubs and giving them a new lease of life".

Another reader said she was glad that the pub had changed hands after a bad experience there last summer.

She said: "I'm really looking forward to trying this place again soon. I've heard good things about the new management."

The pub will open for business again at 11.30am on Thursday, March 19.
