Flooding from a burst water main froze overnight and closed the Brighton Road (A217) resulting in traffic chaos this morning.
One lane reportedly remains closed on the northbound side of the road between Burgh Wood and the Banstead Crossroads. There is also congestion on the A217 to the Tadworth Roundabout.
Last night Surrey Police's Roads Policing Unit posted on Twitter: "Brighton Road currently closed northbound at Burgh Heath due to ice. Anyone got any ice skates?"
It added: "They have been gritting but are fighting a losing battle as the burst water main is washing the grit away!"
This morning a community Facebook group, What’s on in Banstead, posted: "This is causing problems on Bolters Lane as it's being used as a diversion. The whole area will be very congested."
