A man who threatened to jump off a multi-storey car park was talked down by a member of the public earlier today.

Police said the man was in dangerous position in Epsom’s car park next to the Ashley Centre before being approached by a woman who was concerned for his safety.

The Epsom and Ewell Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “PC Lester King helped a member of the public talk a male down from Waitrose car park threatening to jump.

“The male concerned had mental health issues.

“The male concerned is now safe and doing well. A big thank you goes out to the female who helped speak to the man concerned and helped bring him down.”

Similar incidents have taken place at the shopping mall car park in the past and a woman was talked down from the roof in July.

A spokeswoman for Epsom Council, which owns the car park, said: "A man was taken from the car park today."

A police spokesman said: "Surrey Police was called to the Ashley Centre in Epsom at around 11.40am this morning following reports of a concern for safety of a man.

"An officer who attended the scene and a member of the public spoke to the man and he was subsequently taken to a place of safety."
