A gang of muggers punched a teenager in the face while trying to steal his phone on Friday night.

Three men attempted the theft while the 17-year-old 2boy was walking in the tunnel area of Waterfields in Leatherhead between 9pm and 10pm.

One mugger asked the teenager to hand over his phone but he refused. He was then punched in the face, but still kept hold of his phone.

Detective Constable Steve Cassidy said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time the offence was committed and who saw anything suspicious which may connect to contact officers.

"I would also ask anyone who believes they know those responsible to share this information with us.

"Thankfully the injuries the victim sustained were not serious but the experience will stay with him for some time which is why we are committed to finding those responsible."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference 45140107597. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
