The driver of a sports car has died after a car crash in Leatherhead in the early hours of Saturday.

His silver Mazda sports car collided with a black Mercedes on the A24 between the Beaverbrook and Knoll roundabouts at 2.40am.

Both drivers were taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting but the Mazda driver, in his 50s, later died.

The road was closed for about five hours during the emergency response and police investigation into the crash.

A mission report said an air ambulance landed nearby and its crew accompanied an injured car driver to hospital by road.

It said the patient had head, thorax, upper arm, upper leg, lower leg and abdomen injuries.

A spokesman from Epsom fire station said firefighters cut one of the drivers out of the wreckage.
