A flood alert has been issued for the River Mole at Leatherhead provoking concern among last winter’s flood victims.

The river level stood at 2.6 metres at 3.30pm, above the 2.4-metre level where flooding becomes possible.

At 11am the Enviroment Agency said: “The flood alert for the Middle Mole remains in place.

“River levels in Dorking and Brockham are falling but the river level at Leatherhead and Cobham is still rising.

“This is most likely due to the surge of water from yesterday’s rainfall still making its way through the catchment.

“It is likely that river levels in Cobham will remain high for the rest of the day. The forecast is for a dry day today and between 3 and 5 mm of rain across the catchment Tuesday.”

Fields at Thorncroft Stables today

A flood alert is a general early notification of possible flooding.

Indra Starnes, her husband and their pets were rescued by boat from Thorncroft Drive, Leatherhead, on Christmas Eve.

Ms Starnes said she plans to check on their home which they hope to move back into on December 12.

She said: “We are keeping our fingers crossed until then.”

Last winter racehorse rehabilitation centre Thorncroft Stables was repeatedly flooded and firefighters had to rescue a pony there on Christmas Eve.

Owner Andrea Norbury today said their fields have flooded and they have moved their horses out of the stables to higher ground as a precaution.

Ms Norbury said: “I’m scared we’re going to have a really rubbish winter like last year. I’m concerned about the whole situation.”
