Young linguists have battled it out in the language of love in the Schools French Speaking Competition, with Epsom College winning two of the three categories.

Blenheim High School, Epsom College, Glyn School and Rosebery School were all represented in an event organised jointly by Epsom Rotary Club and the Epsom and Ewell Town Twinning Association.

The town is twinned with Chantilly in France.

The junior category (aged 7-9) recited a poem, intermediates (aged 10-11) spoke about themselves and seniors (aged 12-13) talked on a subject of their choice.

The junior winner was Rosebery’s Zornitsa Todorova; Anna Muir of Epsom College won the intermediate event and the senior prize was won by Elise Mathers, also of Epsom College.

The judges were members of the twinning association and the prizes were presented by its president, the Mayor of Epsom, Councillor Robert Foote.

Clive Smitheram, President of Rotary and Honorary Vice President of the Twinning Association said in his closing remarks that never again can it be said that the English can’t or won’t speak foreign languages: these young people have proved otherwise!
