Men in First World War kit will cycle and march from a Belgian battlefield to mark the 100th anniversary of military action.

The 10th Essex Regiment Living History Group is starting its journey in Mons where the British Expeditionary Force fought one of the war's early battles on August 23, 2014 in a bid to stop the German advance.

Logistical organiser Timothy Richardson, from Shelvers Spur, Tadworth, said: "This year, the 100th anniversary of the retreat, the group - 50 strong - will be marching in full 1914 uniform and kit or cycling again in period uniform on restored WWI bicycles.

"Starting at Mons they will be travelling South first to Le Cateau then keeping to the original route taken in 1914 will end up in the town of Guise a distance of just over 90 kilometres.

"The event is to raise funds and awareness of the Leatherhead based charity Combat Stress who deal with mental health problems within the ex-service community."

The group is based in the Home Counties and is a regular at Bourne Hall Museum in Ewell

The battlefield tour which will last from Saturday, August 23, to Monday, September 1, is one of many organised to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening actions in the Great War.

The group said: "Our trip will take in many of the places made infamous in August 1914 and as a group we will be marching and cycling between those locations for a busy schedule of living history encampments and ceremonial duties."
