The Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Robert Foote, said: "We are here today to rededicate this memorial, a monument conceived and paid for by the residents of this community, dedicated to members of their generation, so that future generations would not forget their courage and their sacrifice."

Following the service led by his chaplain, Rev Martin Wainwright from St Paul's in Howell Hill, those present visited the Commonwealth War Memorial in the cemetery.

The Ashley Road memorial is inscribed with the names of 264 men and one woman who lost their lives in the Great War.
