On Tuesday, June 4, the centenary of the death of suffragette Emily Davison at the Epsom Derby, we will find out which artwork the public want erected on a roundabout on the Downs to commemorate the battle for women's rights.

The announcement will be made at the Ebbisham Centre in Epsom where the competing artworks have been on show.

On Friday Francisco Diaz went down to the centre to find out what people thought about the scheme and the contenders:

Your Local Guardian:

Marie Hooper, a part-time mathematics tutor, from Epsom, said:

"I think it's a good idea to want to commemorate her in this way.

" I think they should have put up a memorial a long time ago. Given she died 100 years ago I think it should have been done ages ago.

"A lot of people in Epsom talk about her, they always talk about her to children in schools around here - how she was a suffragette, a woman, how she was killed."

Your Local Guardian:

Susan Walters, from Epsom, said:

"I heard about this on the website and in the local paper.

"I was pleased when they put up a plaque for her on the railings near Tattenham Corner.  I think this a really good idea.

"There is Emily Davison Drive, near Tattenham Corner train station.  It's nice to see they're commemorating here in this way.

I knew what I was going to vote for before I came in. This could be a bit better publicised."

Your Local Guardian:

Nicci Bonfanti, a member of the Epsom and Ewell business partnership, said:

"They announced this at a meeting a few weeks ago. I thought it was a fabulous idea.

"The thing that made me really interested is that they said there are hardly any memorials for women in the UK, so that's why we wanted to come and see it.

"She did a lot for women, she died for women. It's great that 100 years later she is being remembered. 100 years later is a good idea to put things right.

"I'm proud to be in Epsom, it's an important part of the history - and I think it's a good idea to put her on the map. I love the idea, the concept. I like the idea women are involved.

"There are local artists here and I like the idea they are bringing in local students from the art college on our doorstep. They all look quite different - it's like judging apples and pears."

Your Local Guardian:

Fabia Bonfanti, student, said:

"I think it's a good idea. We're learning about this at school. I think it's quite interesting."

Graham Nightingale, who works in Epsom library, said:

"It's been getting a lot of interest - I have seen a lot of people looking at it. I have read it and looked through it.

"One or two looked a little bit ambitious.  And being on a roundabout, no-one is going to get out and have a look at. It needs to be something quite obvious to be able to work.

"There needs to be something to say what it is, otherwise people won't know what it's about.

"She was of her time, really. There has been a lot of interest but I don't exactly know how many people have voted."
