Train companies Southern and South West Trains are working together to consider the practicalities of getting Epsom into Zone 6.

MP Chris Grayling said he had a "constructive" meeting with senior managers from the companies last Friday, May 3, at which they showed a "genuine willingness" to get Epsom into a London zone, but that the cost to the train operators, as a result of the change, is still an issue.

He said: "Everyone agrees that the current zoning boundaries are illogical, particularly when Tattenham Corner and Epsom Downs stations are in Zone 6 and Epsom is outside.

"There is a genuine willingness to do something about it, though there are some significant barriers - most notably the cost of making a change.

"The two companies said they would be happy to do some joint work on the concept, and will come back to me shortly.

"They are now permitted to do this as the Transport Minister Norman Baker has given them formal consent to hold the talks."

Mr Grayling said he is "looking forward to seeing what the companies come back with".

The Epsom Guardian launched its Zone 6 for Epsom campaign last May to end the anomaly of Epsom station not being included in the London travel network, meaning that Oyster cards, which offer discounted prices compared to standard paper tickets, cannot be used for travel through the station.
