Surrey Police officer arrested in corruption probe Surrey Police officer arrested in corruption probe

A serving Surrey Police officer has been arrested as part of a Metropolitan Police investigation into allegations of illegal payments to police and public officials.

The 39-year-old was arrested at his home in the county yesterday morning.

A serving member of the Armed Forces, a Ministry of Defence worker and five Sun newspaper journalists were also arrested as part of the police probe.

They were all interviewed by officers from Operation Elveden, the Metropolitan Police investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials.

Operation Elveden is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is being run in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the police inquiry into the phone-hacking of voicemail boxes.

It was launched following allegations about the now-defunct Sunday newspaper News Of The World targeting murdered Walton schoolgirl Milly Dowler's mobile phone.

The police officer was arrested on suspicion of corruption, and misconduct in a public office. His home was also searched.

He was bailed until a date in March.
