An 84-year-old man lost control of his car coming out of Waitrose in Esher High Street just after 4pm yesterday and crashed into a dentist's surgery.

A specialist orthodontist was in the downstairs room when the Silver Saab hit the building but was not injured.

Arun Merha, an accountant at the Neen Tree dentist, said: "The guy was coming out of Waitrose and banged straight into the front of the building making the building shake.

"He was very shaken. Luckily a nurse was walking by and she helped him into surgery and made sure he was OK until emergency services arrived."

He was given oxygen and treated for whiplash.

A truck winched the car away from the front of the dentist's.

Principal dentist Smita Merha said: "It was lucky there were no patients in at the time. The whole building shook. Some of the people in the surgery thought it was an earthquake. We're now putting pressure on the council to put bollards outside the shop.

"God forbid a child had been walking past. It's the summer holidays but usually school children are walking past all the time."
