Angry residents have stepped up a campaign against Linden Homes after the developer officially submitted plans to expand its development.
Sandy Lane Site Action Group (SLSAG), which last week predicted "rivers of poo" as a result of inadequate sewage treatment for the development, has launched a petition against Linden which has already gained over 500 signatures from residents in nearby Teddington and Hampton Wick.
It comes after Linden applied to Richmond Council last week to add an extra 40 apartments to the planned 198 on the former Seeboard site in Sandy Lane.
The action group claims residents feel cheated having only backed the original plans following a verbal understanding in 2005 that the development would not be expanded. It also claims that 98 per cent of the residents questioned in the seven streets overlooked by the proposed development signed the petition.
David Harnden, SLSAG chairman, said: "There is a wall of opposition to these plans. People living for miles around would be worse off if this new application went through. Local services would suffer, there would be extra pressure on school places and the congestion and pollution in the area would only get worse."
The protest has gained the backing of local MP Vincent Cable, and of residents' groups the Teddington Society, the Hampton Wick Association and the Friends of Bushy and Home Parks.
A spokesperson for Linden said: "We conduct our business in a responsible way and minimise the environmental impact.
"We are currently completing detailed studies into the additional needs that the residents will require in the local community."
The plans can be viewed at Teddington Library until July 14.
