A cyclist who crashed into a tree during this year's RideLondon event has died following a coma.

Richard Kell, 71, from Abingdon in Oxfordshire, was airlifted to St Georges Hospital, Tooting, after hitting the tree near Pyrford in Woking.

His life support machine was switched off on August 23, after he failed to recover from a coma.

He had been taking part in the 100-mile cycle through the streets of London and Surrey on Sunday, July 31, to raise money for the British Red Cross.

Mr Kell has become the second rider to die after this year's RideLondon event, after 48-year-old Robin Chard collapsed and died from a cardiac arrest on Kingston Bridge.

Another cyclist was airlifted to hospital during the event after receiving a serious head injury from falling off his bicycle in Thames Ditton
