A teenage boy who died while swimming in the Thames at Walton has been named locally as Dominick Naylor.

Friends have taken to social media to pay tribute to the 15-year-old, whose body was recovered from the river on Wednesday after he was seen "swimming with his mates" near Felix Road.

Specialist divers, firefighters and a police helicopter began a full scale search of the river after they were called at 2.20pm. Dominick’s body was discovered just over two hours later.

Heartbreaking tributes were left at the riverside. One read: "Heaven has gained a beautiful angel today.

"I wish I had words to lighten your agony but sometimes words are just not enough.

"Please accept my deepest condolences. From a Rydens school family."

Writing on Facebook, Lulu Louder said: “Rip my boy best friend, never gonna be the same without you. Miss you loads.”

Aaron Knechtl said: “Rest in peace, I'll miss you along with so many others.”

Stephen Goodheart posted: "Rip Dom, he was a good mate to everyone. Will be the brightest star tonight. Rip mate."

Witnesses described seeing the former Rydens Enterprise School pupil swimming with friends before the alarm was raised.

Alan James, 74, of Beasley’s Ait Lane, helped police officers with the search.

He told this website on Wednesday: "I’d just come in from my workshop when suddenly there was all this shouting.

"All of a sudden his mate was shouting he had gone under and desperately trying to get him out. I believe he was swimming with his mates, they were all about 14.

"I’ve a sonar device in my boat that shows you the underline of the river bed. You can see exactly how deep it is. [The emergency services] took my boat out and found him.

"All the neighbours were jumping in, it’s just a shame it had such a rotten ending. It’s a horrible, horrible thing.”

A Surrey Police spokeswoman thanked residents for helping with the search.

She said: "A search operation, involving police, fire and ambulance crews and the police helicopter, as well as a team of divers from Specialist Group International, was launched around 2.20pm to locate the teenager.

"Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident, but it is not believed to be suspicious or that there is any third party involvement at this time.

"Members of the public are thanked for their assistance with the search."
