Two rowers from Molesey Boat Club have won gold in the men’s coxless four finals in the Olympic games.

Mo Sbihi, who was part of the bronze medal-winning crew in the 2012 Olympics, and George Nash, a former Cambridge Blue and World Champion at U23 and junior level, won the race gaining a time of 5 minutes 58.61 seconds ahead of the Australian team.

The pair rowed with Leander club rower Alex Gregory and Oxford University boat club rower Constantine Louloudis.

The gold medal today makes Great Britain’s fifth consecutive Olympic title.

Australia took the silver medal, coming just 1.83 seconds behind team GB, while Italy took the bronze.

Nash, speaking to the John Inverdale at the BBC, said: “I would say it was spot on. We had a great hand.

“We played the full hand today and got away with it. It was an epic row.”

Sbihi added: “It’s a fantastic crew.”

Gregory said: “Coming up to the start line was tortuous. We did it on the right day.”

Bill Raspin, chairman of the Molesey Boat Club said: “It was fantastic, it was an amazing performance. They stuck to their race plan and brought home gold. We’re really proud.

“It was never going to be a walkover – they kept them [Australia] behind themselves. It was a good race.”

The club is also gearing up to support Molesey rower and double Olympian Andrew Triggs Hodge in the men’s coxed eight tomorrow.

Mr Raspin said the club would celebrate Sbihi, Nash and Triggs Hodge’s return on October 5 at a fundraising ball.
