The father of a "vibrant" 17-year-old girl from Teddington, who died after falling ill at The O2 in Greenwich, has warned of the dangers of taking illegal drugs.

A post-mortem examination held yesterday, at Greenwich Mortuary, did not establish a cause of death and Met Police are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests, it has been confirmed.

However, Emily's dad Steve Lyon has warned others of the "tragic consequences" of taking "recreational substances" as it emerged that five other people, including a 16-year-old boy, were taken to hospital after reportedly taking illegal drugs.

A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of possession of MDMA with intent to supply.

Mr Lyon said: "We are absolutely devastated at what has happened and we're struggling to come to terms with it.

"Emily was a wonderful, vibrant young lady. She was a loving daughter and a caring sister, who was much adored by her vast circle of friends.

"It can be seen how these so called 'recreational substances' can result in such tragic consequences for so many people. Those who take them can pay the ultimate price."

Others have taken to social media to pay tribute.

Dan Dean, principal of Esher College, said: "The students and staff of Esher College were shocked to hear of the devastating events of last Friday night.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with Emily's family and friends. A range of support is on offer through the Student Welfare team for those most deeply affected, including access to experienced College counsellors.

"However, there has been a strong sense of collective grief across the entire College community this week, as we attempt to come to terms with this tragic loss.

"At the appropriate time and in consultation with those closest to her, we plan to arrange a fitting memorial for Emily, who was a popular and exceptional Esher College student."

John Wilkinson, headmaster of Teddington School, said the entire school community was saddened by the loss of its former pupil.

He said: "Emily involved herself completely in the school and brought her unique sense of fun, intellect and purpose to all she did.

"We were incredibly fond of her and we miss her a great deal.  Our thoughts are with Emily’s family and friends.  In time, the students will guide us on how we celebrate Emily’s life.

"Until then we have a book of condolence open at the school and school staff are providing support."

A spokeswoman for the O2 Arena said: "A 17-year-old female was treated onsite at the O2 on Friday evening and was taken by paramedics to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she sadly died.
