Several horses in Walton have died after being neglected by their owners, police believe.

Surrey Police is appealing to residents near Fieldcommon Lane to help officers investigate the ongoing problem of horses escaping from fields adjoining the road.

PC Hollie Iribar said she had discovered evidence of horses that had died from neglect.

She said: “The main issue we have is horse neglect and horses escaping from insecure fencing around the field.

“We are frequently called out to attend to loose horses that have escaped from the field causing a danger not only to themselves but to motorists and pedestrians.

“Our concern is the risk of someone being seriously injured as a result of their actions. During recent site visits to the field we have also found evidence of several horses that have sadly died due to neglect.”

Surrey Police said it had been working with Elmbridge Council and the RSPCA to put measures in place to resolve the problem, as well as speaking to the landowner.

A mare and foal were killed in February after escaping from the fields and running into oncoming traffic in Molesey Road.
