Murderer Levi Bellfield has finally admitted he abducted, raped and killed Walton schoolgirl Milly Dowler in 2002.

FROM 2011: Milly Dowler's family in tears as Levi Bellfield found guilty of her murder

Bellfield, who has renamed himself Yusuf Rahim in prison after his conviction in 2011, made the admission to Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team detectives investigating a man over claims he was an accomplice in Milly’s death.

He has never before admitted responsibility.

The man, in his 40s, was arrested today but released without further action after officers found no evidence to support claims that he was involved with Bellfield in the abduction and rape, but not murder, of Milly, 13.

Surrey Police say the claims have been “thoroughly investigated” and made the arrest as part of their final inquiries, but a lack of supporting evidence has meant the man has been released with no further action.

Milly’s family have asked for their privacy to be respected as they continue to grieve for the loss of their “beloved daughter”.

Following the revelation, the Metropolitan Police was asked if Bellfield has confessed to any of his other crimes for which he is serving life for.

A Met spokesman said: "We can confirm the Met Police is liaising with a number of other UK police forces in relation to information which has been passed onto us regarding a number of criminal investigations.

"That information remains subject to assessment and for that reason we will not be discussing the matter in further detail at this time.

"We are not prepared to discuss at this time the number of investigations or details of any case."

Bellfield was found guilty of murdering Amélie Delagrange on Twickenham Green, Marsha McDonnell in Hampton and for attempting to murder Kate Sheedy in an Isleworth industrial estate.
