A group of Esher College students have safely returned home after narrowly escaping harm in the terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday.

Photography students from the college in Weston Green Road were on a school trip in the French capital when terrorists carried out a series of attacks on civilians at various locations across the city.

At least 129 people were killed in the attacks in restaurants and bars in central Paris, the Bataclan concert venue and the Stade de France where an international friendly football match was being played by France and Germany.

Hundreds more were wounded in the attacks by terrorist organisation ISIS.

The 36 students and four staff on the trip were unable to leave the country after borders were closed following the attacks but are now confirmed to be safely home.

They had departed on Friday morning and arrived home via Eurostar on Sunday afternoon.

A spokeswoman from Esher College said: “The college followed Foreign Office advice and all students and staff remained within their hostel until being advised that they could continue on their journey home with caution.

“Throughout this time the college was in constant communication with the Foreign Office, Surrey County Council, parents and the group themselves.

“We would like to confirm that all students and staff were unharmed, although understandably shaken, and we are extremely pleased to report that they have all arrived home safely.

“Clearly, this has been an extremely worrying time for the students and staff involved, together with their friends and families.”

The college also said it was offering help and support to the students involved through their two college counsellors.

Principal Dan Dean said: “We are extremely grateful to the staff and students involved for handling a terrible situation with calmness and fortitude.”
