A husband banned from seeing his wife for more than six months has discovered she is in intensive care.

Mahindan Mahadeva, 44, has not seen his wife Uma, 38, since January after a police investigation into an alleged assault on her placed restraints on his contact with her.

The former pharmacy worker was arrested six weeks after reporting a blister on Uma’s arm to staff at Wingham Court Care Centre in Claygate where she lived having suffered a brain injury.

He is accused of causing the blister.

Since his arrest, police have extended his bail three times and as part of his bail conditions he is not allowed to make any contact with his wife of more than two years.

The couple lived together in The Forum, West Molesey, before Uma suffered a blood clot in her lung in February 2014.

She spent months in hospital before arriving at the care home at the end of August last year.

Wingham Court Care Centre was rated as requiring improvement by CQC inspectors in February.

A spokesman for Wingham Court Care Centre said: “We are following the instructions of adult safeguarding and our only concern is the continued safety of our resident.”

Unable to see her and with no charge for the past six months, Mr Mahadeva is planning a 24-hour hunger strike in Kingston town centre on Saturday, August 1.

Originally from Sri Lanka and both native Tamil speakers, the pair met through work.

Mr Mahadeva said: “If I am guilty charge me straight away.”

Neighbour to the couple Bevil Templeton-Smith, said Mr Mahadeva fully understood protocols, but not being able to see his wife was “a punishment of the worst kind”.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “Surrey Police is currently investigating reports of assault in Esher in January 2015. A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains on bail until September 15, while enquiries continue.”

Surrey County Council's safeguarding department did not respond.
