Ditch: The dead dog was hidden, people believe

Found less than two months after a pony was found dead on Desborough Island, Weybridge, the dog in Littleworth Road, Esher, is thought to be a mastiff or pitbull.

Kerry, whose mother lives near where the dog was found on Friday, June 5, said: "The fact it was wrapped in blankets is a clear sign the dog was to be hidden and just dumped into the ditch. This is not the first time animals have been dumped down Littleworth Road, Esher.

"A few years ago a pony was dumped there but thankfully we got to him in time. This time the dog was already dead or dying upon it being dumped.

"It was a large breed of dog, mastiff or pitbull breed, brown and took two men and rope to get it out.

"This is not the way to go about dealing with a sick or dying animal, charity's are there to help. It saddens me to think it may have been a fighting dog or breeding dog and had done its service and was no longer needed."

She said two men sent by the council knocked on her mother's door and asked for some rope due to the position and size of the dog.

The dog warden told her the dog would be scanned at the depot to see if it was chipped.

An Elmbridge Council spokesman confirmed a dead dog was reported and said: "It was collected on Friday, June 5. As is normal practice for cats and dogs, it was scanned for a microchip, but none was found."

A RSPCA spokesman said they had not been notified of this particular case, but said: "What the RSPCA's concern always is is what happened to the animal before he died.

"We would urge anyone with any information at all to call us on 0300 1234999."
