A fund that has helped more than 80 groups has been given a £500,000 boost.

The Community Improvements Fund to support residents' efforts improve their areas has been given the cash by Surrey County Council.

Bids can be made for between £10,000 and £30,000 and must be received by July 22.

A shortlist will be drawn up for council leader David Hodge, who launched the fund three years ago, to consider on October 7.

Coun Hodge said: "All the projects that have already won cash, from a youth cafe to a community pavilion and a skate park to an outdoor gym, are great examples of the county council and residents joining together for the benefit of Surrey.

"They have made the county an even better place to live and I'm looking forward to receiving even more bids for schemes that make a real difference to people's lives and help residents independently enhance where they live."
