Bidding is now open for offers of interest for a development project now an unpopular care home element has been dropped.

With space now for 50 residential units, office, nursery and doctors surgery space offered, the care home plans first included in the proposal has been omitted, and the council agent, Strutt & Parker, is advertising for offers of interest from developers.

Feedback from the proposals to develop the Stompond Lane sports ground showed the proposed 60-bed care home was unpopular.

This proposal is still subject to planning permission. A meeting to decide this will take place in July, after figures detailing a range of expected costs are known at some point in June.

John O'Reilly, leader of Elmbridge Council, said: "The plan has always been that the capital receipt from Stompond Lane would help finance the development at Waterside Drive."

An Elmbridge Council spokesman said: "The council wishes to achieve good value from the sale of this public asset whilst also ensuring that any development respects the character and environment of the surrounding area.

"The sale of the site also needs to pay for the full costs of the replacement sports facilities in the Sports Hub development at Waterside Drive. This includes covering the council’s legal obligations in respect of the contaminated land.

"The sales particulars are now seeking interest in purchasing and developing the site in line with the existing planning consent but this also identifies the opportunity to replace the care home with dwellings."
