Famous faces and transport links into London have seen Esher named the UK's highest income tax hotspot.

People in Esher and Walton have seen average income tax bills rise by 8 per cent in a year, found a study by accountancy group UHY Hacker Young. The average bill was almost four times the national average, at £16,900.

The average annual income of people living in the area is £59,600, more than £30,000 above the average annual salary nationally. This figure is boosted by residents such as Frank Lampard, Gary Lineker and Mick Hucknall.

Stoke-on-Trent Central had the lowest tax bills at £2,100, almost £15,000 less than Esher.

Mark Giddens, head of private client services for UHY Hacker Young in London, said: "The combination of relatively high density of high earning celebrities and easy transport links to the City of London for those working financial services, mean that many parliamentary constituencies across the south-east, and Esher in particular, are a real hotspot for the taxman."

Adding: "In election year, this could well be a delicate area for political candidates in those areas to navigate. Whether residents of Esher will relish the title of most highly income taxed area of Britain is doubtful."

The other top five highest income tax paying constituencies are all within an hour's commute of London. They were Chesham and Amersham, Windsor, Beaconsfield and Dorking and Leatherhead.
