A van carrying hazardous substances caught fire on the M25 at junction 9 just before 12.30pm today.

A HIghways Agency said the van was carrying chlorine.

The M25 anti-clockwise was blocked with vehicles stopped and opening their doors to get out in the hot weather.

The van caught fire between junction 9 near Leatherhead and junction 8 at Reigate, with traffic queuing back to the Cobham services near junction 11.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it sent three fire engines and a water carrier and as of 2pm were still dealing with the incident.

An exclusion zone was put in place around the van fire until a specialist team could arrive.

A Highways Agency spokesman said as of 2pm one lane anti-clockwise had been opened.
