A brave woman abseiled 90ft down a racecourse stand in memory of her grandfather who died of cancer.

Lauren O’Malley, 28, from Epsom, and 72 other people abseiled down the Queen's Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Saturday.

The charity challenge has so far raised £21,000 for Princess Alice Hospice, based in Esher, which cares for thousands of terminally ill patients in Surrey.

Ms O’Malley did the abseil in memory of her grandfather Robert Howard who the hospice cared for at the end of his life.

She said: "He had terminal cancer, and was looked after with so much care and compassion that I really wanted to pay them back for all the help they gave us as a family.

"I was really nervous about doing the abseil, but really wanted to help the hospice to raise some money."

She added: "It took about ten minutes to get all the way down. I even had the chance half way to relax and enjoy looking around me."
