The petition against a controversial waste disposal development is gaining momentum, with as almost half the target signatures acquired.

Weylands No Way is against a second application for Weylands Treatment Works, Molesey Road. After the first was dismissed last year an updated application with revisions such as a reduction in lorry traffic was submitted in February.

Councillor Andrew Kelly, representing Walton Ambleside, said: "Walton Conservative councillors, working with Weylands No Way, started this petition to show that our community's concerns about this proposal remains as strong as they did first time.

"I'm delighted we're already half way to our 2,500 target, the number we got on the first petition."

The first petition was delivered to councillors in April last year.

A spokesman for applicant Clean Power said: "The application provides a unique opportunity to transform a site allocated for waste recycling in the Surrey Waste Plan into a modern, high-tech estate with a suite of planning conditions to ensure all operations are within environmental limits.

"Crucially, the revised application has dramatically cut the HGV vehicle numbers to below the levels that are currently generated."
