An optician is visiting her ancestral Indian village to carry out eye tests for people who cannot afford them.

Navdeep Gill, optometrist at Specsavers, Walton, is funding the trip to Dhudike, Punjab, herself and taking out unused and unwanted glasses Walton residents have donated.

She will run an eye camp in the village to help raise the importance of eye tests.

The 23-year-old has a strong history of glaucoma from her mother’s side of the family. He grandfather has lost most of his sight so she knows how important it is to diagnose the disease early.

She said: "The history of glaucoma that has affected so many of my relatives made me realise how lucky I am and I really want this trip to make a difference. It’s my way of giving back."

Ms Gill held clinics in Dhudike from February 17 to 18.
