Commuters will be forking out more money to travel as train fares will increase by 2.3 per cent next year.

South West Trains confirmed a rise in cost from January 2, 2015, keeping in line with the government's separate announcement in Wednesday's Autumn Statement season tickets and other fares will rise by 2.5 per cent.

A single journey at peak time from Weybridge to Waterloo will move from £7.80 to £7.90.

A yearly season ticket from Epsom to Waterloo will increase from £1,876 to £2,092

A yearly season ticket from Surbiton to Waterloo will increase from £1,760 to £1,800

And a yearly ticket from Wimbledon to Waterloo will increase from £916 to £936.

Tim Shoveller, chief executive of the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance, said: "Over the never five years, Network Rail is spending on average £27m a day building and maintaining a better railway that benefits passengers, communities and businesses across Britain alongside commitments made by train companies to improve services.

"That will mean more seats, better stations and improved journeys.

"For every pound spent on fares, 97p goes on track, train, staff and other costs while 3p goes in profits earned by train companies for running services on Europe's fastest growing railway.

"The industry is continuing to work together to get more for every pound we invest to enable government to make fares decisions which work best for passengers."

The cost of a single journey will rise by an average of 9.5p, the lowest increase for five years, with the overall average price increase across the UK in 2015 will be 2.2 per cent.

New fares are now available to check and buy online.
