Burglaries fell by 16 per cent during the Bonfire Night and halloween season, after a joint campaign by various police forces.

Detectives from Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Thames Valley worked together in the hunt for buglary suspects from October 27 to November 16.

It coincided with Bonfire Night, which usually leads to an increase in crime in the region.

This year there were 189 burglaries, compared to 222 last year.

Superintendent Jerry Westerman said: "The campaign has been a great success both in catching burglars and encouraging people to make their homes less attractive to offenders."
