Sea scouts have created a memorial mosaic for a courageous police officer who was killed in a hit-and-run a year ago.

Father-of-two, PC Andrew Duncan, 47, from East Molesey, was knocked down by a car during a routine traffic operation, in Sutton, on September 20, 2013. He died in hospital two days later.

The work-of-art was unveiled on Monday, September 22, at the 1st Molesey (Jaguar) Sea Scouts Group headquarters, in East Molesey.

PC Duncan was a volunteer leader for the scouts and the brightly-coloured display has been funded in part by a charity, Andrew Duncan Memorial Fund, and the scouts themselves.

The mosaic was created by Kim Porrelli, an artist based in Kingston, and is made up of hundreds of painted tiles that portray a scene PC Duncan was fond of, at Sadlers Rise, West Molesey.

The intricate memorial depicts various boats on the water, with PC Duncan at the helm of one.

His sister, Julia Williamson, and his wife, Claire Duncan, designed the mosaic in May and the scene is based on photographs of the scouts on the water.

Mrs Williamson said: "Kim captured his character perfectly.

"I was training for the marathon and I was running across Kingston Bridge, on a training run, and I saw the most beautiful mosaic on John Lewis' wall.

"We had been trying to think of something to do, and it was perfect. I thought this would be a really nice thing to do.

"My sister-in-law [Mrs Duncan] and I wanted it to be beneficial to the group so it doubles up as a sign, as they don't have one."

Following PC Duncan’s death, the scouts received funds in his memory and had been looking for something to do to commemorate his life.

PC Duncan’s family members, along with cubs and scouts, helped put the two-and-a-half-metre mosaic together, which is displayed on a wall outside the scout’s headquarters.

Since it was established the Andrew Duncan Memorial Fund has raised over £20,000.

The charity raises money for community projects in Molesey, where PC Duncan grew up and lived. It also supports a number of police charities.

The driver who killed PC Duncan was jailed for eight-and-a-half years, at Kingston Crown Court, in February, this year.

Gary Bromige, 25, of Holland Road, South Norwood, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, causing death while unlicensed, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.
