Services from Woking to London Waterloo are some of the most overcrowded in the country.

The 7.02am and 7.32am services calling through Walton, Hersham and Esher were found by the Department for Transport to be among the most overcrowded between September and December 2013.

The earlier service from Woking had, on average, 378 passengers over the train's capacity of 738, with the later service operating 402 over capacity on an average weekday morning.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: "On many of our routes, where possible, we run 12 carriage trains during peak hours and the two trains highlighted in the report are already operating at the maximum length.

"Providing extra capacity on our network is a key priority and work is already well underway on a programme of investment to deliver longer trains for passengers."

A train's capacity is defined as all seats, including an allowance if passengers are standing for less than 20 minutes.

Transport Minister Claire Perry: "Train operators must act now, they must find new ways to create space on the network and in their trains.

"I understand the frustration of rail passengers forced to stand on busy services and that is why I am calling on the operators to do more."
