The old British Legion Club in Claygate has entered a new era after being converted into a martial arts centre.

The former private members’ club in Hare Lane was bought by martial arts instructor and international martial artist James Barker, who has converted the centre into a base for students to train.

The club officially opened on Saturday, January 12, with a weekend of demonstrations and taster session and Walton and Esher MP Dominic Raab cut the ribbon.

Mr Raab said: “I was lucky enough to train from the age of 12 at a fantastic local karate club. It was brilliant for discipline, respect and of course fitness. I am thrilled Claygate and the wider area will have the same opportunity.”

Mr Barker started doing Kuk Sool Won martial arts at nine, and was already teaching the art to other students while at sixth form.

Specialising in the traditional Korean martial art, Mr Barker’s business operated from school and village halls in Oxshott, Esher, Molesey, Bookham and Claygate before looking for a permanent base for the club.

Mr Barker said: “The club is doing well and I’ve been really pleased with the way our numbers have increased with many of the parents who bring their children to classes signing up themselves.

“The business is going so well that my wife Vicki gave up her job and joined the business as well and we were ready to take the next step and find a permanent home for the club.”

More than 200 members are part of the club, with ages ranging from three-and-a-half to 74.
