A looter who pulled a motorcyclist from his bike during the Croydon riots will be spending the next five Christmases behind bars.

Ryan Kichenside of The Lawns, Upper Norwood, was jailed for five years and 10 months after pleading guilty to robbery at an earlier hearing.

Shocking footage emerged of the moment the 18-year-old pulled a biker off his scooter, as he tried to weave through rioters on London Road on August 8.

The court heard the victim, Jason Barton, a surveyor in his 40s, suffered a fracture to his left ankle after it was crushed under the scooter.

In a victim impact statement Mr Barton said: "Without warning someone jumped on my back, had both hands on my neck in a headlock type grip and pulled my body to the ground."

The scooter, which had £1,700 cash under the seat, was worth £3,000.

Kichenside, a father-of-one with 13 previous convictions, also pleaded guilty to violent disorder and two counts of burglary.

Graham Lloyd, prosecuting, said the teenager carried out a "leading role," when caught on CCTV breaking into the Early until Late shop on London Road.

The court heard Kichenside also fulfilled a leading role when attempting to enter the Ideal Discount shop.

CCTV footage of him karate kicking the window was played in court.

Judge Peter Grobel told him: "You played a prominent role in the West Croydon civil disorder on August 8."

Kichenside was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution for violent disorder and two years and six months for the robbery, to run consecutively.

He was also sentenced to 16 months for two counts of burglary to run concurrently.
