Inspirational speakers from the business world will be sharing their knowledge with entrepreneurs, successful companies and would-be traders at the second annual We Mean Business event on October 7.

The free all day exhibition aims to bring together small to medium business, consumers and key business leaders from organisations within the borough as the country attempts to shrug off the effects of the recession.

Speakers at the event will include online entrepreneur Nigel Botterill, chief executive of a business empire which includes some of the fastest growing concerns in the country, and Twitter guru Mark Shaw.

Mr Shaw, a successful businessman in his own right, has turned marketing via the social network into an art form, and will be passing on his tips at the Federation of Small Businesses(FSB) organised event.

Denis Rawlings, vice president of the Croydon branch of the FSB, said: “Last year was very much themed on surviving the recession but this year we’re focused on moving forward, which is why we’re trying to have influential speakers.

“We noticed particularly last year a lot of entrepreneurial women so we want to make sure we’re representing them this year.

As it’s been stated by people like Business Secretary Vince Cable, they recognise the small to medium-sized businesses are going to be the backbone of the recovery.

“We want to encourage as many businesses in Croydon and the surrounding areas to avail themselves of what’s available in the market today, especially those things which don’t cost us anything like Facebook and Twitter.

“We have all seen that the Internet is a fantastic marketplace for us but it’s very easy to get buried in that.

“It’s important at this time to give people information and inspiration - and not just people with a business, but people thinking about starting a business.

“Now is the time to start talking about that as the economy starts to develop and grow, and dare I say it the green shoots start to appear.”
