Croydon MP Andrew Pelling feared he might be kicked out of the local Conservative group after members raised concerns about him attending a Labour fundraiser.

Mr Pelling went to a fundraising dinner for Councillor Gerry Ryan at the Croydon Hilton on November 14 where fomer Mayor Ken Livingstone was a guest speaker.

Members of the Conservative executive, who met last night, discussed Mr Pelling’s attendance at the fundraiser but insist that there were no plans to expel him from the party.

Ian Parker, the Conservative election agent, said: “It was not an item on the agenda and there was no resolution bought before the committee.

“Members expressed concern that Mr Pelling attended a fundraising event for one of Gavin Barwell’s opponents.

“However, we recognised the long service that he has given to Croydon and so no action will be taken against him.”

Mr Pelling has sent an email to the party asking what allegations were made about him.

He asked why he was only advised “in the vaguest of terms of the meeting's business relating to unknown allegations about me only seven hours before that meeting took place”.

He also wanted to know why he was not invited to the meeting to respond to the allegations.

He told the Croydon Guardian: “It would be extreme to expel me from the party bearing in mind the 32 years of service that I have provided.

“My daughter has joined the Labour party and that was the main reason that I went along to the fundraiser, to support my daughter.

“Ken Livingstone is a friend and various members of the Labour party have been very supportive of me.”
