Kate Moss is a 21st century British icon along with mashed potato and chavs, says a survey.

The 33-year-old Croydon-born supermodel defines modern society, according to Harper's Bazaar magazine.

Burberry and Topshop, two companies with which she is involved, also featured in the survey.

Britain's most iconic fashion item was the Burberry trench coat and Top Shop was named the favourite brand of 54 per cent of the 1,000 people questioned.

And mashed potato is the best loved dish when it comes to comfort food.

The survey by Harper's Bazaar magazine appears in the September issue, which goes on sale Thursday.
