A man has been critically injured followed a stabbing in Thornton Heath that is being treated as attempted murder.

Police were called to reports of a man who was "bleeding heavily" after being stabbed in Bensham Lane, near to the junction with Lodge Road, at 8.30pm on Wednesday, March 29. 

Metropolitan Police officers now believe the stabbing took place in Kelling Gardens, at the junction with Bensham Lane.

The 23-year-old victim was taken to a south London hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. 

Officers are keen to trace two men who fled after the attack, who are thought to have run along Bensham Lane towards Cameron Road.

The first suspect is described as a black man, with a heavy build and about 5ft 6 ins. He was wearing a dark puffer jacket and dark trousers.

The second man is also said to be black, with a slim or average build and about 5ft 5ins. He also wore a dark puffer jacket and dark trousers.

Road closures are still in place around Bensham Lane while Croydon CID investigate. 

No arrests have been made.

An employee at the London General Store on the corner of Bensham Road said: "I saw lots of police this morning, I heard it happened last night. The whole road was blocked."

An employee at Kiss Kuts Barbers in London Road said: "When I was on the way to work the bus wouldn't move, it took me 20 minutes to get from here to Streatham, the whole place was locked off."
