A gang member who left an innocent man fighting for his life after repeatedly knifing him in the back has been jailed for nine years.

Liam Chambers, 20, of Caterham, left the victim with multiple stab wounds after the “unprovoked attack” in Croydon Road on the evening of May 8.

The thug, of Church Road, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm, affray and possession of an offensive weapon following the shocking assault.

The victim, believed to be in his 40s, is expected to make a full recovery.

Chambers pled guilty to the attack yesterday at Guildford Crown Court and was sentenced to nine years in prison.

The judge also extended his licence by two years, which means he will be hauled back to jail if he commits an offence after his release.

Detective constable Jack Poynter, of Surrey Police, said Chambers belonged to gang that had “caused issues” in Caterham for a number of months, and described his arrest as a “particular success”.

He added: "This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent victim, who consequently suffered serious injuries from multiple life-threatening stab wounds to his back. However, thankfully he is now making a full recovery.

"I welcome the sentence Chambers has received and hope he now recognises the consequence of his actions, taking this time to reflect on how he has affected this man's life.

Two other members of the gang, Jeremy Bird and Jack Jones, were also convicted of burglary, possession of drugs and driving offences. Both were jailed for 21 months.

Detective Constable Steve Pearman said: "Following this series of incidents, all three of these criminals are now where they belong - in prison.”
