A lorry driver has been bailed following the death of a 25-year-old cyclist in Croydon.

The 48-year-old man was being held by police on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene after the fatal collision in St James's Road just after 1.30pm yesterday.

He has been bailed until a date in mid-September pending further enquiries.

The victim, a woman, was pronounced dead in the road.

Her next of kin have been informed but she has yet to be formally identified.

A post-mortem examination is set to be carried out.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision, which took place on the rail bridge near the junction with Lansdowne Road.

Police erected a forensics tent at the scene of the crash and shut St James's Road for several hours following the cyclist's death yesterday.

Witnesses described paramedics fighting the save the cyclist's life.

Rachel Goff, a director at Sth London Services in nearby Lambert's Place, said: "I had been downstairs to make a cup of coffee so I didn't see the accident but I saw it seconds after it happened.

"To be honest she already looked dead.

"It seemed like it took forever for [police and paramedics] to turn up and they worked on her for a while.

"They did CPR and they got the defibrillator out."
