A Volkswagen Golf and a lorry crashed - with a female driver injuring her back - on the M25 near Leatherhead this morning, which caused heavy congestion.

The two women who were travelling in the car were taken to hospital by ambulance, with one being treated for a back injury.

The driver, in her thirties, was stable and fully-conscious, but complaining of back pain, South East Coast Ambulance said.

The crash happened at around 9.55am this morning between junctions 9 and 8 anti-clockwise.

Fire crews from Leatherhead, Epsom and Woking were called at 10.03am, and the Woking crew assisted the drivers of the vehicles.

Highways England said lane one has reopened, after being closed for 30 minutes, and there is no residual congestion.

Cars are still blocking the hard shoulder.

Highways England said: "There was a road traffic collision at 9.55am between junction 9 and 8 between one car and one HGV.

"Lane one was closed for 30 minutes until 10.35am. There were no other closures.

"The incident is ongoing and the vehicles are still on the hard shoulder.

"The lanes have now been re-opened and there are no residual congestion."
