A convicted match-fixer who used to own Croydon Athletic FC has been jailed for tax fraud, more than five years after his arrest.

Mazhar Majeed, 40, purposefully under-declared income from his development and rental businesses by £259,000 in an attempt to avoid paying tax, an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) found.

He was originally arrested by HMRC on August 29, 2010, the day after the News of the World published a story revealing Majeed's role in match-fixing involving the Pakistani cricket team.

Secret recordings made by a News of the World reporter had included the claim by Majeed that the "only reason" he had bought a majority stake in Croydon Athletic in 2008 was as a front for money-laundering.

The club was subsequently investigated by tax inspectors. It was disbanded in 2011.

Majeed, who was born in Croydon and went to Coulsdon High School, was sentenced to 32 months in prison in November 2011 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to cheat at gambling and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments while working as an agent for Pakistani players.

Majeed unsuccessful appealed against his conviction in May 2012. He pleaded guilty to the HMRC charges of tax fraud on November 27, 2014.

On Friday at Croydon Crown Court, he was sentenced to two years in prison, exactly a year after entering his guilty plea.

Alan Tully, assistant director of HMRC's fraud investigation service, said: "Majeed was a very wealthy businessman who tried to wriggle out of paying his fair share.

"He selfishly stole money that should have been used to fund vital public services and he now must pay the price for his dishonesty."

The investigation into Majeed's tax affairs, which began in June 2010, found that he had not declared all of the income gained from the sale of properties.
