Roads were closed and buses diverted from about 3.30pm yesterday afternoon after the crash, reportedly involving at least two vans, at the junction of Wickham Road and Verdayne Avenue.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were all called in response to the crash.
Just after 6pm last night a Metropolitan Police spokesman said a man was still being treated for "life-threatening injuries" by paramedics at the site of the pile-up.
The Met has since confirmed that the man was later taken to south London hospital, but his injuries are no longer thought to be life-threatening.
One social media user said she saw a man being "cut out" from a vehicle by emergency services.

The crash involved at least two vans, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said.
Two of the vehicles involved in the four-way crash departed after their drivers left details with the police, according to the Met.
