Police and firefighters were called to Croydon town centre following reports of a suspicious package.

Update (5.10pm) Police have given the all-clear and roads have reopened

Trams between Reeves Corner and Sandilands were suspended and buses were diverted after the discovery in Addiscombe Road.

Police with sniffer dogs and London Fire Brigade attended.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said it had been called to Addiscombe Road, at the junction of Colson Road, at about 4pm.

It is understood officers were called to reports of a suspicious package.

Commuters took social media to describe rush-hour "chaos".

Transport for London said all routes serving Addiscombe Road and Cherry Orchard Road Croydon were being diverted and delayed due to a "subject to diversion and delays due to a police incident".

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said it had been called at 4.10pm and was "assisting police".

The Metropolitan Police confirmed at 5.10pm that it had given the all-clear for roads to reopen.

Trains from East Croydon rail station have not been affected.
