Richmond Park and North Kingston MP Zac Goldsmith has been named as the Conservative London mayor candidate.

Mr Goldsmith achieved a massive 6,514 votes to be selected - 5,000 more than second place choice MEP and Surbiton resident Syed Kamall.

Deputy mayor for policing Stephen Greenhalgh was in third place with 864 votes and London Assembly member Andrew Boff came in fourth with 372 votes.

Environmentalist Mr Goldsmith said he would be campaigning on green issues and addressing London's housing crisis during his campaign.

He said: "Our living environment is facing increasing pressure, and we will need to protect, enhance and improve access to our green spaces, as well as radically improving the quality of the air that we breathe.

“But the biggest challenge of all is the housing crisis. Londoners are being priced out of their city and we will need a step change in the number of homes built, and the manner in which they are built.

“I am honoured to have been chosen as the Conservative mayoral candidate and I will work tirelessly to repay that debt."

Mr Goldsmith will fight Labour MP for Tooting Sadiq Khan, Liberal Democrat Caroline Pidgeon and Green Party’s Sian Berry for the London Mayor position in the 2016.

Twickenham MP Tania Mathias said she was "absolutely delighted" that Mr Goldsmith, who campaigned with her earlier this year, had received the nod.

She said: "Zac knocked on doors with me and was fantastic at engaging with people - I have total confidence he understands this area."

Referencing Mr Goldsmith's recent difficult LBC radio interview when a caller accused him of being born "with a silver spoon in his mouth", Dr Mathias said he can connect with Londoners from all backgrounds.

She added: "I heard the LBC interview and even on the phone, he managed to engage with that person."
