Thousands of pounds were raised across the borough last Friday as cancer charity Macmillan held its 25th annual world’s biggest coffee morning.

At the Whitgift Foundation Almshouses’ common room in Croydon town centre, more than £500 was raised in an hour by staff selling homemade treats.

Organiser Diane Sutton said: “I’m absolutely over the moon that we raised more than £500 for Macmillan.

“Thank you to all who contributed and attended to support this worthy cause – every cake shared helps us be there for someone affected by cancer, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.”

Members of local organistions including Croydon BID, Centrale, Whitgift Centre, Old Palace of John Whitgift School, NatWest, Office Centre and Stiles Harold Williams also took part.

Further up North End, a month-long fundraisng campaign for Macmillan at Croydon's Marks and Spencer store ended with an impressive total of £8,000.

Live music, coffee, cake and games were all on offer to customers on Friday.

Store manager Paul Reeve said: “With it being the event’s 25th anniversary, this year had added significance, so we are delighted to have raised such a fantastic amount for what is an incredibly impressive and worthy charity.”
