Dancers young and old entertained the crowds while they basked in the sunshine at the Addiscombe Festival.

Bells jingled and sticks clattered as Morris men showed their footwork and youngsters from the Yelo dance company also impressed.

As is tradition at the event in Ashburton Park, there was a tug of war tournament where Croydon Lions took on the combined force of the police, army cadet and scout teams.

There was the usual discontented cries of unfair play and cheating but the Lions were judged to be the victors.

Other attractions included live music and a fun fair.

Festival spokesman Keith Nicholas said: "The Addiscombe Carnival had to be rebranded a festival due to the fact that once again the planned parade had to be cancelled.

"Another let down was the lack of a stage which was also withdrawn the day before.

"However, the glorious sunshine and blue skies meant that the rest of the event was able to carry on. "Without the stage meant that several planned acts were unable to perform but several arena displays kept the crowds happy and entertained.

"We were pleased to see a record number of stalls and several new associates taking part, including "Friends of Ashburton Park, who have pledged to support next year’s event as well as promote the park for community events.

"Croydon Lions and John Coneley’s Fun Fair wish to thank all for their support."

This year's nominated charity was the Rutherfords School for severely disabled children in South Croydon.
